I don't know what Earth looks like normally. [ A beat. ] Or how films work. Are they like recordings on the tablets? They actually happened, I mean.

Davesprite indicated to me that some of the stories were just stories.

[devoutish]

Yeah, the stories are sometimes made up. This one surely is; it's nothing like Earth history. But you've got to have people and creatures to play out the story.

[bywolves]

... I don't know. House didn't talk that much about his home world. Maybe they all exist where he's from. [ Which makes House's elf racism like eight times as bad, in Royce's opinion. ]

No, I don't think so. He called them fantasy.

[voiceinthephone]

[Phil obliged Alfie for a second and tasted the shortbread. It's pretty good!]

Don't you worry, it's pretty good! Zephyr probably had a good idea to give you a house you'd be familiar with. You can ask them if you ever want to change it into something more homely for you.

Where'd you come from? Not where you came before this place, where you were, um, were born.

I'm from America, 1993, near Detroit! I'm pretty sure you've had other encounters with people from the far past or far future, the worlds kinda interconnect that way...I think I've gotten past some of the mental hurdles.


Is Mr. Royce from your time as well?

[devoutish]

So have I, yeah.

[It was a trip at first, but now it's just another day.]

Royce is from another world entirely. Hadn't even heard of Earth before he came to Norfinbury.

Sounds like you're close, must've been hellish out there, to be so out of your element like that.

Close, yeah.

[Close is an understatement.]

Well - we're out of it now.

Have you settled into something to do in the Meadous? It doesn't have to be hard labor, just something you'd like to do with the skills you had home.

[Phil is completely oblivious of who Alfie Solomons is orwhat his job was back home. He looked like someone like a merchant.]

[A little grin plays across Alfie's face.]

I don't think you'd like me to use the skills I use at home, mate.

Unless you were a serial killer, I don't know if that will be the case.

[There's a subtle edge to those words as Phil had his own experience dealing with two on his original world and in Eros.]

[devoutish]

Nah.

[If Phil's response hadn't had that edge, it would have read as naively optimistic to Alfie, and he would have been sorely tempted to be a little more teasing and baity - but he respects the caution.]

Still, it's not the sort of profession you'd likely be happy about.

Early September

[bywolves]

[ Royce doesn't even think about asking Alfie to go hunting with him, for whatever reason. Maybe it's just the routine they've settled into - Royce catches food, and Alfie makes it. But Royce, for whatever reason, doesn't feel like going alone today, so he goes to hunt Alfie down in their house, adjusting his cloak. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie's puttering around in the kitchen, not so much cooking as shifting ingredients around, planning future meals. He has a hunk of cheese out and sitting on a slice of homemade bread, and that's the extent of his lunch-making today.]

Hullo, Royce.

[bywolves]

[ Royce hoists his butt up on the counter, as usual. ]

What are you doing?

[devoutish]

Getting ready to give you a great big shove.

[bywolves]

[ Royce just settles in, smirking a little. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie knees him in the thigh.]

Ow. [ Royce says, loftily. ] I was going to invite you to go with me, but now I'm not going to.

[devoutish]

Go where, hunting?

[bywolves]

Mm. Did you want to come along?
