[Well, Alfie has to shove him now. It's not a very hard shove, though.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce laughs, catching himself before he goes tumbling off. ]

Alfie Solomons. [ He reprimands playfully. ] What if I'd fallen off and broke my neck?

[devoutish]

Then you would have had something to hold over my head for the rest of our lives.

[bywolves]

True. [ He nudges Alfie gently with a hum. And just so Alfie knows - Royce sends him the flood of happiness he feels at being able to joke like this, again. ]

[devoutish]

[Awww. Alfie tilts his head to rest it against Royce's for a moment, then pulls back so that he can lean over and stir the stew.]

[bywolves]

[ He's quiet for a moment, just soaking it in, and then: ]

The rest of our lives. [ He repeats. He likes the sound of that. ] I'm glad.

[devoutish]

[It's a very sweet sentiment, but the context still makes Alfie grin cheekily]

Glad to hold things over me?

[bywolves]

[ He laughs. ]

I'd do that no matter how long we live, Alfie.

[devoutish]

[SIGHS]

I suppose I'd better get used to it now.

[bywolves]

[ Royce rests his head on Alfie's shoulder. ]

As if you're not already used to it.

[devoutish]

[Alfie wraps an arm around Royce's shoulders, falling into companionable silence as he waits for the stew to cook.]

[bywolves]

[ He sits for a while, taking in that companionable silence, and then he reaches to take Alfie's hand. ]

Hey, Alfie.

[devoutish]

Mm.

[He turns his hand over in Royce's, threading their fingers together.]

[bywolves]

[ A soft hum. ]

I've been thinking, since your dinner - I've been thinking about asking Zephyr if they'll give me my memories from Norfinbury.

[devoutish]

[Pause.]

Rosh Hashanah dinner made you think of that?

[bywolves]

Well - not exactly, just. You said you spoke with Gabriel about Norfinbury, not long after. It's been on my mind.

[devoutish]

I see.

[Alfie's making a big effort to keep his voice light and even here, but Royce will notice the stiffening of his shoulders, and the way his fingers still against his.]

How set are you on the idea?

[bywolves]

[ Yeah, he definitely notices. He frowns, also, glancing at Alfie. ]

... Would you not want me to?

[devoutish]

I think there's something to be said for looking to the future instead of the past.

[bywolves]

[ He tilts his head back. ]

I'd like to know what I'm missing, is all.

[devoutish]

[Quietly:]

Are there other reasons?

[bywolves]

[ A pause. ]

I want to know if it's over. I want to know if I'm real or not.

[devoutish]

You're real.

[He squeezes Royce's hand, hard.]

You are, I promise you.

[bywolves]

[ Sigh. ]

I just want to be sure.

[devoutish]

[Alfie exhales a breath that's just a little bit shaky.]

Do you want us to do it now, so soon to winter?
