[ He's quiet for a while more, just enjoying the comfort, and the way that the crystals start to glow. He holds Alfie tighter, and sighs out slow, trying to hang onto the feeling. ]

[devoutish]

[Awww, Royce. Alfie floats some of his own contentment and comfort over to him, to help with that.]

[bywolves]

[ It helps. It eases him up quite a bit, and he actually feels a bit better about just - talking. He doesn't want to ruin the calm, but he wants to get this out of his system, of all his issues with the people he loves. ]

Renart and I are fighting, I think. I'm not sure.

[devoutish]

What about?

[bywolves]

I'm... I'm not sure. I thought she'd come talk to me again after we talked about her and Monty being monogamous, but she hasn't.

She left abruptly.

[devoutish]

[Alfie sighs, biting back on a few choice words that Royce probably doesn't need to hear right now.]

I'm sorry, mate.

[bywolves]

I'm less upset about it than I was, I think. [ He says, eyes closed. ] I'm more... annoyed.

[devoutish]

[That's better than upset, at least.]

I know she's a woman, mate, but you could give her a cuff about the head, if you wanted to.

[bywolves]

[ He makes a face. ]

The fact that she's a woman doesn't matter to me. I'm not much of a punching sort of person to begin with. [ Huff. ] She promised she wouldn't run away when we had an issue. But she did.

[devoutish]

[Alfie's lips twist.]

Do you wanna know what I think, mate? Truly.

[bywolves]

Yeah. I do.

[devoutish]

They've never treated you well, Royce, and it seems to me they've always made you more miserable than happy. They don't deserve you, and you deserve better.

[bywolves]

[ He frowns, and shifts so he can lay on his side instead. He buries his face against Alfie's neck. ]

That's not what you said before. [ But things change, he knows. ]

[devoutish]

I have said before that I don't think they treat you well.

[bywolves]

Well - yes, but before you said they did more good than bad. Before the shadows. [ A pause. ] I'm not necessarily... disagreeing with you.

[devoutish]

Well, all right; they haven't always made you more miserable, then. And they brought you out of your shell, a bit; I like seeing you get on with other people. But ever since the shadows, you've been upset with the pair of them more often than not. With Monty, it started even earlier.

[bywolves]

I know. [ He shifts, uncomfortably. ] Monty is - he's more reasonable when it comes to discussing. Or at least, he's been trying to be. We had a long talk, and it was productive.

But Renart, she - one wrong step and she takes off running. [ Then, almost embarrassed: ] I'm sorry. I never realized how irritating it is when I do it until someone did it to me.

[devoutish]

You've gotten better.

[He pauses.]

You might get after her about it, like I've done with you.

[bywolves]

I didn't get on her about it, but the last time we spoke, I told her if she ran away again, if she left me to fix things on my own - that'd be the dealbreaker. Not her mind control, or the fact that she's only sleeping with Monty.

[devoutish]

And was it?

[bywolves]

I think it might be. [ He breathes out, almost guiltily. ] I don't know.

She understands a lot about me. But I'm not sure I'm willing to walk on a tightrope, and never deal with anything bad that comes our way. She can't, or won't, change, because of what she is.

[devoutish]

I still think that's a poor excuse.

[bywolves]

I understand what she is, and that she can't change her fundamental personality, but it doesn't make it less exhausting for me to deal with.

I can't change who I am, either, but I can stop running.

[devoutish]

Well, that's it exactly, isn't it; the whys of it all don't make the reality of what it's like to deal with it go away.

You're a wiser person than she is, Royce, and you're braver, as well.
