[bywolves]

I wouldn't -- [ Sigh. ] I wouldn't hide or feel unwelcome. I'd just stay out of the way. There's a difference. But fine.

[devoutish]

And you've got something else on your mind, as well.

[He can always tell.]

[bywolves]

[ He really can. Royce huffs. ]

I went hunting. [ He says to his book. ] With some people.

[devoutish]

Yeah?

[He rests his head on Royce's shoulder, despite the heat.]

[bywolves]

With John. And K. Separately. One went better than the other.

[devoutish]

Do you wanna tell me about it?

[bywolves]

Yelled at John. Didn't make me feel better at all, really. [ He'd lost his cool and then snapped at John to leave - he's been thinking about it since then and it didn't really feel like it did anything. Maybe just made it worse. ] He knows about everything that happens.

[devoutish]

Is he gonna bother you about it when you'd rather he not?

[bywolves]

No. I didn't get that impression. [ A pause. ] I told him to leave, and he did. Just didn't really... help. I don't feel any better about it.

[devoutish]

What would have helped, then?

[bywolves]

[ He sighs. ] I think he just wasn't the right person.

It went much better with K.

[devoutish]

Good. Was he the second trip, then? After John?

[bywolves]

Mm. He actually asked to go with me. Wore me down on the idea.

He stood with me and talked to me. Distracted me through it. He's calming. I managed to skin a whole rabbit without losing my mind.

[devoutish]

[Alfie reaches down and finds Royce's hand, giving it a squeeze.]

I'm proud of you.

[bywolves]

[ Royce lets Alfie feel the gratitude, squeezing his hand in return. ]

That's why I was sort of tipsy when I got home the other night. He took me drinking, after.

[devoutish]

[Alfie shoots over some warm, lazy comfort in exchange.]

At the pub?

[bywolves]

Mm. We played piano a bit. He wanted to show me something he composed.

He's starting to figure out how to be human. It's nice to watch.

[devoutish]

Your friendship has surely helped with that, you know.

[bywolves]

[ Royce smiles a bit, tilting his head back to stare up at the ceiling. ]

I like the idea of that.

[devoutish]

I'm proud of you for that too, by the way.

[bywolves]

[ Royce looks amused. ]

What, making friends?

[devoutish]

Being a good friend. Yes. Wasn't it just a few months ago that you were telling me you didn't think you were built for friendship?

[bywolves]

I still don't really think I am. [ He squeezes Alfie's hand again. ] I think I'm just trying harder.
