I don't think it would go well the tea. Or the bread. [ She gestures at them ] Another time? I bet they're lovely. I think Royce and I have pretty similar tastes. Or at least we were drinking the same thing at John's party.

[devoutish]

Did you talk, then?

[He closes the wine cabinet, turning back to the tea and pouring himself a cup.]

[furgood]

A little. It was dark and hard to see to read his lips. [She sighs ] And I was a little tipsy. I might have laughed at him a bit. He jumped like a cat when the fireworks went off.

[devoutish]

Ah. Was he offended, then?

[furgood]

I don't think so. He was more thrown by the my cat puns. They get worse when I'm drinking. Or sleepy for that matter.

[devoutish]

You always talk like you can't control them.

[furgood]

I can but it's a habit. You know how those are. And having less inhibition means a little less keeping them in check.

[devoutish]

Well, all right; fair enough, fair enough. I've been known to talk a bit more like a London man when I'm drunk.

[furgood]

I don't even know what that means. [ She shrugs ] But alcohol has plenty of odd effects.

[devoutish]

It means you wouldn't have the slightest idea of what I was saying. Not in the least.

[furgood]

I'd make you write. [Teasing grin] Wouldn't do to not understand you.

[devoutish]

You wouldn't understand it written, either. You'd know the words, but not what they meant.

[furgood]

You realize this just makes me curious what you mean right?

[devoutish]

We've got this rhyming thing that we do, right. Kids made it up ages ago. Replace one word with two words and make the second of 'em rhyme, then drop the word that rhymes. You've got your "wife", which is your "trouble and strife", but you just call her your "trouble". See how that goes?

[furgood]

Sounds like the most ridiculous inside joke ever. Also I still don't understand men who Marti women and then complain. Don't marry someone you don't love.

[Easily distracted]

[devoutish]

Oh, but we can complain about the ones we love, can't we?

[furgood]

Trouble and strife? I think I'd be a little annoyed if my husband called me that. [ Pause ] Meowbe. Unless I knew he was kidding.

[telecosmetic]

[Eliza nods.] Yeah, it was pretty great! My wish for the children's section of the library came in too, and I had fun at John's Christmas party! Plus I ate a bunch of Christmas snacks. [She's lucky to still have a teenage metabolism, really.]

[devoutish]

And now you've got more. A king's feast.

[He gestures to the rugelach.]

[telecosmetic]

[Eliza takes a breath and inhales the scent of bread.] Yes...this tribute pleases Her Majesty! [She points regally into the air, holding that pose for a moment, then just starts chuckling.]

[Unlike Royce, Emily tried to wrap the gift; however, like Royce, she is shit at any attempt, so it's kind of janked up.

Regardless, she cons Alfie into sitting down in preparation, and begs Royce to come along despite the two's little "argument" a while back. She thinks maybe it'll help them reconcile a little more. Besides, Royce somewhat helped in the decision making.] It's okay. You don't have to close your eyes. I put it in paper.

[It's weird. Not a small present, definitely shaped strangely. Looks like a stick wrapped in paper, perhaps about three feet in length. She presents it to Alfie by holding it out in two palms.]

[bywolves]

[ At least she tried. Royce straight up just doesn't wrap anything.

In any case, Royce comes along with her to help her deliver her present, lips twitching at the sight of the janky-wrapped present. It's cute. He stands right behind her and bit to the side, hand on her shoulder as she presents Alfie with his gift. ]

[devoutish]

Oh, now, look at this.

[He murmurs in surprise, carefully taking the wrapped present and settling it in his lap as well as he can. He starts unwrapping it from one end, slowly bringing the paper down.]

Look at this. Is this from both of you?

[empireofrats]

Yes! [She's probably more excited than Alfie about it being opened.

It's not hard to tell they both had a hand in at least discussing what the present should be. About what Alfie could expect from how it looked wrapped: not a tree branch, but a cane. Sturdy, weighty, and decorated elegantly.

Emily hadn't known much about Jewish symbolism, so she asked Royce and then asked Zephyr to help cast the top with an engraving of the Star of David.

What's more, the hefty notch around the top means it can be slid open. Surprise! There's a hidden blade inside no thanks to Knifedad.] Do you like it, Alfie?

The cane you had from Norfinbury was old. So I wanted you to have a new one.

I imagine you can't guess who suggested the knife. [ Royce says, dryly, poking fun at himself. ] It's mostly from Emily. She came up with the idea.

[ He reaches to smooth her hair back gently, smiling a bit. ]
