[Vaguely amused is definitely better than dead inside. He wiggles his fingers.]

[bywolves]

You say that. Might change your mind when I tell you I stole all of them.

[devoutish]

[He lets out a mock gasp.]

How shocking; how terrible. I can't believe it. I would never.

[bywolves]

[ Alright, alright. Royce huffs out a very small laugh. ]

Never stolen a thing in your life, have you? Completely innocent.

[devoutish]

I'll have you know I'm a baker. Here, here; you'll be taking these back.

[He pulls off one of the rings and sets it on Royce's knee.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce almost protests, but. There's a second where he just stares down at it, and then he picks it up and slowly puts the ring on, just looking down at it. A beat. ]

Expensive looking ring for a baker. [ Royce says finally, voice a little heavier than before. He's fine. It's fine. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah. I should pawn it, shouldn't I.

[bywolves]

Mm. No, you already gave it back to me. Mine now. I'm going to pawn it.

[devoutish]

At least make sure you get a good price for yourself.

[bywolves]

Of course. Not going to stop until I get twice the price it's worth. [ He's still looking at the ring, sort of distant. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie starts to tilt the tablet in Royce's direction, but does it slowly enough that it's obvious what he's doing, and Royce can slap it away easily if he wants to. He figures Royce wouldn't want his face recorded without his permission.]

[bywolves]

[ Alfie's not wrong on the permission thing. After everything, Royce is less afraid of the tablets stealing his soul or something. He's still not super down with being recorded in general, but he doesn't bat the camera away, he just glances at Alfie.

Not the camera, Alfie specifically, raising an eyebrow. ]

[devoutish]

What?

[They're both visible on the screen now, though Royce is still very much in the periphery.]

[bywolves]

Nothing. [ Royce pulls his hood down a little further. ] You're recording. Which means with my luck, something that'll end up with one or both of us dead for good is going to happen to us in the next few days.

[devoutish]

And how would recording cause that?

[bywolves]

Irony. [ A beat. ] Or whatever it is that makes it so that nice things are overshadowed by life kicking dirt in your face.

[devoutish]

Say something, then. Say something to make this a good memory for when the bad times come.

[bywolves]

I'm not good at that. [ Royce sighs, tilting his head back. He sinks against the couch, staring at the ceiling. He's quiet for a long moment, and just about when it seems like he's not going to say anything at all, he murmurs: ] Thank you.
