I don't think I solved anything with... with Monty or Renart. [ He murmurs. ] But I feel like I can. And I think that's what is important.

[devoutish]

Yeah.

[He nudges his elbow lightly into Royce's ribs.]

That's a fucking relief, mate; I've been worried about you over this.

[bywolves]

I've been worried too. [ He glances up at Alfie. ] It's - well.

[ He lets Alfie feel the relief, the weight off his shoulders. The realization that he's not alone and doesn't have to be. ]

And - once the mental block happens, I'll be okay there, too.

[devoutish]

Do you think she'd do it to you when she's her whole herself?

[bywolves]

No. I don't. I don't think I can judge her based on what her shadow did.

[devoutish]

Will you be surprised if I say I don't either?

[bywolves]

[ He shakes his head. ] I'm not incredibly surprised, no.

[devoutish]

Mm, yeah. I'd take it into consideration, but--

[Shrug.]

People generally don't act with only half their selves intact.

[bywolves]

I think that she has more control of herself than she gives herself credit for.

[ He sighs heavily. ] But I know she won't want to talk about this.

[devoutish]

But will she do it even though she doesn't want to?

[bywolves]

I think if I ask her to, she might.

[devoutish]

[Alfie presses his lips down into Royce's hair, then reaches for his own teacup, wiggling his arms up from around Royce so that he can hold it in both hands.]

I think you're right, yeah.

[bywolves]

[ Royce shfits to allow this, yawning a bit as he sinks down into the couch. He's so much warmer here. ]

... I saw Monty's shadow, too.

[devoutish]

And it didn't go well?

[bywolves]

[ He taps his fingers almost anxiously against his tea cup. ]

It didn't go poorly, but I wouldn't say it went well, either. [ Sip. ] He said he still thought I overreacted. That the fact that I nearly fell apart when I thought I lost you means I am unhealthily attached to you.

[devoutish]

[Alfie snorts at that.]

Fucking ridiculous.

[bywolves]

Mm. I am attached to you, but I don't know if I care that it's unhealthy or not. Especially not when the definition is made by some young, cocky earl.

[devoutish]

I don't see what would be unhealthy about it.

[bywolves]

[ He shrugs. ]

I don't know. And like I just said, I don't really care.

[devoutish]

I care. I'd care if it was unhealthy.

[bywolves]

[ He glances at Alfie. ]

I don't think that it is, so it's a moot point either way.

[devoutish]

[Alfie grumbles, grumpily, and tightens his grip on his mug.]

[bywolves]

[ A beat, and then: ] Why would you care?

[devoutish]

I don't like how they talk to you sometimes, that's all. This is more of that. They don't always treat you well, those two.
