[Alfie presses his lips down into Royce's hair, then reaches for his own teacup, wiggling his arms up from around Royce so that he can hold it in both hands.]

I think you're right, yeah.

[bywolves]

[ Royce shfits to allow this, yawning a bit as he sinks down into the couch. He's so much warmer here. ]

... I saw Monty's shadow, too.

[devoutish]

And it didn't go well?

[bywolves]

[ He taps his fingers almost anxiously against his tea cup. ]

It didn't go poorly, but I wouldn't say it went well, either. [ Sip. ] He said he still thought I overreacted. That the fact that I nearly fell apart when I thought I lost you means I am unhealthily attached to you.

[devoutish]

[Alfie snorts at that.]

Fucking ridiculous.

[bywolves]

Mm. I am attached to you, but I don't know if I care that it's unhealthy or not. Especially not when the definition is made by some young, cocky earl.

[devoutish]

I don't see what would be unhealthy about it.

[bywolves]

[ He shrugs. ]

I don't know. And like I just said, I don't really care.

[devoutish]

I care. I'd care if it was unhealthy.

[bywolves]

[ He glances at Alfie. ]

I don't think that it is, so it's a moot point either way.

[devoutish]

[Alfie grumbles, grumpily, and tightens his grip on his mug.]

[bywolves]

[ A beat, and then: ] Why would you care?

[devoutish]

I don't like how they talk to you sometimes, that's all. This is more of that. They don't always treat you well, those two.

[bywolves]

I know. [ Royce leans against Alfie a little more. ] I don't stand for it as much as you might think I do.

[devoutish]

You don't stand for it at all, and that's why even though I may dislike it, I don't worry about it.

[bywolves]

[ A twitch of a smile. ]

Like I said. I'll take what both of them say to me with a grain of salt. I'm too old to hear it from them.

[devoutish]

I do think they're good for you.

[He kisses Royce's hair on.]

On the whole, right.

[bywolves]

I think you're right. That's why I'm going to try to fix things with them. [ A pause. ] But I won't do it on my own. I'm going to need them to put in the effort, too.

We'll see how it ends up. [ He sips his tea. ] I'll need to... to take a while to not want to recoil from Renart.

[devoutish]

And that's very reasonable.

[bywolves]

[ Royce is quiet for a moment, and then: ]

You've done a very good job, this past week. Of being understanding.

[devoutish]

Thank you.

[He pauses.]

You make it easy to be.

[bywolves]

[ Another smile. ]

I'm glad that's the case. [ Sniff. ] There were several times where I thought you'd be angry, or you'd lose your patience, but you never did.

[devoutish]

If I got angry, I knew you'd just give in to it. You wouldn't've fought back. It wouldn't have done anything for you, and I couldn't've beared to see it.

[bywolves]

[ You'd just give into it. Royce runs his thumb along the rim of the cup, thinking. ]

You have power over me. [ Royce murmurs, repeating his shadow. ]
