[ Royce smooths Alfie's hair back, expression softer, a little sadder. ]

I don't want to think about what it'd do to either of us.

Yeah, I know. Can't help it sometimes, though, when things like this happen.

Mm. [ It's the same for Royce. ] I think I can try to believe that even if we are separated we'll find each other again, if you can.

Like collecting color, yes.

[He nudges Royce's leg with his elbow.]

Do you remember what yours were?

Yeah. Silver and emerald. Gave all my silver to Dia, and all my emerald to Eve.

Do you not remember yours?

Red, purple, amber.

[He means crimson and violet for the first two, but he is not at all discerning about colors.]

What do you think it means, that I had three and you had two?

[bywolves]

Don't know. Maybe you're more complicated than me. [ Royce says, with a shrug. ] Maybe I had another that I didn't collect as much of. Once I figured out Dia needed silver, that was mostly what I concentrated on.

[devoutish]

'Course you did.

[Alfie says slyly, giving him another poke.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce makes a face down at him. ]

Nobody else was giving her color. I had to. [ A beat. ] I heard her voice. When I found the silver tree, down in the water.

[devoutish]

[Even though it hurts his throat a little, Alfie cranes his neck up so that he can look Royce in the face.]

Did you? She's all right, then, wherever she went?

[bywolves]

Yeah. I did. [ Royce sinks back into the couch, a little sadder. ] I hope so. I hope that's what that means.

She deserved something good.

[devoutish]

Well. She got you, didn't she.

[bywolves]

[ oh no that's cute wtf ]

Oh, stop. [ Royce says, but he looks very pleased. ]

It's true. I don't think anybody else got as close to one of the sisters as you did.

[bywolves]

I don't think they meant as much to the others as she did to me.

[devoutish]

No. But you've got a talent for that - caring, truly caring, about injustice that speaks to you, and not centering yourself when you do it.

[bywolves]

[ Royce glances down at him, lips twitching. ]

Didn't really use to. Not in Elan. Wonder when that changed.

[devoutish]

[bywolves]

[ Snortlaugh, as he reaches down to push Alfie's face. Gently! ]</small. You're ridiculous. I did no such thing.
