My mum ran from one of those - also in Russia. They burned the houses, set dogs after the people--

[bywolves]

[ Royce shivers, leaning closer. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah.

[He mutters, hunching his shoulders.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce stays close. ]

Part of why I was curious, a long time ago, was because it sounded similar to what half-elves go through. [ Royce mumbles. ] We ran into a community of mir, a long time ago. They were all close. Led by a good woman.

[devoutish]

But you don't miss them?

[bywolves]

No. I didn't know any of them. Never really cared to. And they didn't know I was. [ He gestures at his own face vaguely. ] I don't look it.

[devoutish]

Do you wish that you did?

[bywolves]

[ A long, long pause. ]

... Sometimes. But mostly, no.

[devoutish]

[Alfie curls his fingers into Royce's and squeezes.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce keeps a tight hold, but doesn't say much else as they walk. Being mir is a lot to talk about after the day he's had. ]

[devoutish]

[At the treehouse, Bear trots up the stairs ahead of them, scoping the place out for them. Alfie's pretty dead on his feet by this point, but he sighs and starts slowly climbing.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce helps him up those stairs, even as tired as he is as well. They take it slow. Probably takes a few minutes to get all the way there, but. It's okay. They make it. Royce helps him all the way to the bed, and deposits him there before going to the TV to turn it on and fiddle with the function.

Bear, who has done a thorough check of the place, hops up onto the bed and settles down, seemingly satisfied with how safe it is. ]

[devoutish]

[As soon as he's on the bed, Alfie murmurs something unintelligible but undeniably contented. He pulls off his boots one by one, tossing them towards the door. He sheds his socks next, and then his hat, and then his coat.

Much, much better.]

[bywolves]

[ By the time he's got all that done, Royce has the movie set up. He pulls his cloak off and sets it aside before crawling onto the bed and settling down carefully on the mattress. He leaves room for Alfie, as always, and Bear sprawls easily at his back.

This is good. It's colder, here, but it won't be for long. And the movie will be plenty distracting enough. ]

[devoutish]

Here.

[Alfie spreads the blanket over Royce, tucking it in around his shoulders.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce hums a thank you noise. He's probably not going to last through the entire movie, but he'll make a valiant effort. With a sigh, he pulls Alfie in closer and then starts Fiddler on the Roof. ]

[devoutish]

[When the intro music starts up - made for the movie, but still recognizably Jewish - Alfie sighs, settles against him, and closes his eyes.]

[bywolves]

[ It's a relief, knowing Alfie's content. With the sound of the film in the background and with Alfie and Bear warming him up, it's going to be maybe ten minutes before Royce totally drops off. He's exhausted, but he's safe, and it's easy enough for him to take comfort in that. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie will stay awake a bit longer, but eventually, he'll nod off too. If Royce wakes in the middle of the night - or when he wakes in the morning - he'll find Alfie curled around him, holding him safe and tight and warm.]
