Hadrian seems to think there isn't. [ Royce doesn't know. There's probably a thousand people more suited, but. ]

Well, it's fucking ridiculous.

[bywolves]

Yeah. [ He reaches up to hold onto Alfie's shirt, eyes closed. ] It's fucking ridiculous.

[ He's quiet and upset, and - well, showing off Manzant didn't quite have the effect he was hoping. It's off his shoulders, he thinks, but he can't get the dread and anxiety out of his chest. ]

{Alfie doesn't say what's on his mind, though Royce likely knows him well enough by now to tell that there's something there. He curls himself closer, bringing his hand up to rest on the back of Royce's head, tangling his fingers in his hair.]

[ Royce lets the silence sit for a while more, and then he sighs out slow. ]

What is it? [ Because yeah, he knows Alfie well enough by now. ]

[ Royce tangles Alfie's shirt in his fingers. ]

Kind of is, yeah. [ Sigh. ] Could look at it that way and make it easier.

I'd never have someone head my gang if they were reluctant about it.

Not even if it meant the world was ending if they didn't?

But surely she knows that you want to stay here. You've discussed all this with her before, yeah?

Yeah, I have. And she seemed fine with the idea of staying here with me. With Mercy.

I've never explained what would happen if I didn't go back, though. [ A beat. ] I got into the habit of thinking that time just... stopped. In Elan, where I came from. There are versions of me existing and not existing in so many places that it should be fine if at least one doesn't ever come back, right?

[devoutish]

Yeah, but I don't much like that you've suddenly decided that the world will end if you don't go back, Royce.

[bywolves]

[ A long, long pause. ]

Hadrian is usually right about things like this. Morality things. That's all. [ Royce trusts his judgement, even when he gives him shit about it. ]
