I know about the concept of blowtorches, Alfie. I've not used one.

[devoutish]

Neither have I, but if I learned, I could use it to make you a knife.

[Joking? Not joking? It's a mystery.]

[bywolves]

As long as you don't burn the house down. Or burn yourself.

[devoutish]

I can't promise not to burn myself; there's a learning curve, right.

[bywolves]

Then I'll have to wish away the burns. [ Royce hums, only half-joking. ]

[devoutish]

You've got yourself a deal.

[Alfie leans over, kisses him on the cheek, and then moves to stand.]

Right. I'll be back - I'm gonna go get your gift.

[bywolves]

[ His lips twitch in a smile at the kiss on the cheek, and then he rolls over on his stomach and curls up with his pillow. ]

I'll be here.

[devoutish]

[As often happens, Alfie starts the walk feeling stiff and sore, and ends it feeling loose and limber. He likes light exercise, and it puts him in a good mood; by the time he makes it back to the tree house half an hour later, he's whistling as he comes up the stairs.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce is mostly asleep by the time Alfie makes it back, hair in his face and blankets having been kicked down to his knees. He's still on his stomach, peaceful and easy. When he hears the whistling, he stirs and then yawns. ]

[devoutish]

Are you asleep?

[He pokes his head in the door, then comes in the rest of the way. There's a rolled-up piece of paper in his hand, a bit larger than a standard sheet of office paper.]

You can stay asleep, mate; I can give it to you later.

[bywolves]

Mmf, no. I'm awake. [ And he pushes himself up to sit to prove it, pushing his hair back out of his face and giving Alfie a sleepy look. A beat, then: ]

Is that what you made me? [ He holds out a hand. C'mere. ]

[devoutish]

[It is. Alfie unrolls it carefully, and hands it out to him.

It's a picture of Royce - a pencil drawing, one of the many drawings that Alfie has been working on in his new sketchbook. It's a portrait from the shoulders up, and Royce has his head thrown back and is laughing, eyes closed and hair loose. It's really very well-done, and very lifelike - for all the trouble he's been having with getting landscape scenes to look right, he's pretty damn good at doing faces.]

[bywolves]

[ Oh. Wow. Wow, that's...

Royce stares at it for a long, long moment, holding it. He runs his fingers over the hair, looking sort of awed. It looks just like him. There's a long pause, and then, soft: ]

Alfie. [ He's amazed. ]

[devoutish]

Do you like it, then?

[bywolves]

I - yes, of course I like it. [ Royce says, staring down at it in awe. ] Alfie... it's amazing. I didn't know you could draw like this.

[devoutish]

I'm done some more of you.

[A good third of them involve Royce in some way, honestly.]

[bywolves]

It's lifelike. [ Royce murmurs, and then he looks up at Alfie, expression soft. ] Thank you. This is...

I've never had someone draw me before.

[devoutish]

You keep it. That's for you.

[bywolves]

Okay. [ He looks back down at the drawing, and then very carefully and gingerly rolls it up, not wanting to damage it in any way. ] I'll keep it.

[devoutish]

[Alfie eases back onto the bed next to him, settling an arm around his shoulders.]

I've also been meaning to tell you - I've got some holidays coming up, I think. I don't know the date here, of course, but they would be around this time.

[bywolves]

Yeah? [ Royce asks, glancing at him. ] Like what?

I think Ienzo has a calendar. You could ask him for specifics.

[devoutish]

Yeah, but we've got our own calendar, remember. They were gonna put together a calendar for this world, but I've got no way to know what the Hebrew date is.

[bywolves]

Oh.

[ A pause. ] Is there any way to figure out when the Hebrew dates are? And what holidays?

[devoutish]

The new year and the day of atonement. And-- no. This is an entirely different world, mate; there are no Hebrew dates here.

[bywolves]

[ Royce frowns. ]

... Okay. [ He sounds slightly put out, but. ] What do you do for those?
