[Alfie pats his arm. It's okay, buddy, he knows.]

[ Royce dims it down, and then turns to curl a bit into Alfie's side. He doesn't want Alfie to feel the guilt, just the relief. A pause. ]

Are you still going to talk to Monty?

[devoutish]

Yeah, of course I am. I was gonna go tonight, actually.

[bywolves]

[ He nods a little. ]

He doesn't respond to being roughed up. [ Royce mutters. ] So don't bother.

[devoutish]

What does he do?

[bywolves]

He just stared at me.

He's killed people before, he's not phased.

[devoutish]

Has he?

[That... is actually a surprise to Alfie. He might be very good at reading people, but Monty is also very good at maintaining his persona as a harmless guy.]

[bywolves]

Mm.

In his original world. Not in the Between. [ Sniff. ] Don't spread that around. But he has, and I've seen it in his memories.

[devoutish]

No, I won't, mate. Was it, you know, a crime of passion sort of thing, or something that he might do again?

[bywolves]

[ Royce actually smiles a little, but it's under the hood. His voice is a tinge amused. ]

No, it was planned. He killed most of his extended family in order to be the owner of an estate. All of the people he killed were pompous nobles and their deaths were - clever. [ See, there's a reason Royce likes him. ] He also killed Bucky in Receurdo.

He's a smart, cunning man when he's not being an idiot.

[devoutish]

[Haha wow.]

Fucking hell. I would never have expected it.

[bywolves]

There is a reason he reminds me of Merrick, Alfie.

[devoutish]

I'd thought it was just his demeanor.

[bywolves]

It's both. Merrick was remarkable at pretending he didn't kill people in his spare time.

[devoutish]

Well. I'll keep that in mind when I go pay him a visit.

[He nudges his chin into Royce's hair.]

I won't let on that I know anything. Not a word.

[bywolves]

[ Royce curls closer, resting his head under Alfie's chin. ]

Thank you. [ Sniff. ] Thank you for a lot of things.

[devoutish]

You're welcome.

[He brushes his thumb under Royce's eye.]

And thank you, mate. Always.

[bywolves]

[ It's finally dry. He's still upset, but he's surviving, and he's comforted, at least, by Alfie being close. ]

Yeah. [ Royce sighs out, closing his eyes. He's not sure for what, but he'll take it, this time. ] Sit with me for a while?

[devoutish]

I was planning on it, libling.

[He'll close his eyes too, and just drift.]
