[Alfie falls quiet for a moment, thinking.]

[ Royce settles against Alfie's side again, letting him think. He sends forward a little spark of curiosity - or at least, he tries to. He's not sure if his powers work here or not, considering they're outside Zephyr's realm, but. ]

[devoutish]

[It works! Alfie shifts a little to look down at him.]

You know, Royce-- when I've told you to sort yourself out, I've never meant that you should do it all on your own.

[bywolves]

[ Royce looks up at him. ]

I - oh. Yeah. [ He looks and feels a little guilty at that. ] Right. I know. [ But the reassurance is hasty, like a kid trying to assert they already knew something they didn't. ]

[devoutish]

I mean it, Royce; I never want you to feel as if you can't share your troubles with me.

[bywolves]

I know I can. I do. [ He protests, slightly offended. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah. I just wanted that made clear, that's all.

[bywolves]

Well. It's clear. [ Royce mutters, looking away. ]

I don't want you to talk to that thing again.

[devoutish]

I don't want you calling him a thing.

[bywolves]

[ Scowl. ]

That's what it is. It's a thing. A thing that was part of me and got disconnected.

[devoutish]

But who's still got some of your thoughts and feelings and all.

[bywolves]

If there was one of these for you, would you call it a thing?

[devoutish]

No, I wouldn't. I think we'd get on.

[bywolves]

[ That scowl gets deeper. ]

Of course you would. Fine. I won't call it a thing.

[devoutish]

Why don't you want me talking to him?

[bywolves]

There are some things I want to keep to myself and I don't - want some magical incredibly honest part of me just telling you everything.

[devoutish]

[Beat. Fair enough.]

Okay.

[bywolves]

[ Oh. He was expecting some argument, but he doesn't get it, so he sort of deflates. Royce's jaw works, and then, stiffly: ] Thank you.

[devoutish]

Yeah. I'm sorry, mate; I didn't think of it that way. I wasn't trying to find out your secrets behind your back.

[bywolves]

I know you weren't. [ He says, a little less pissy. ] Really. I know you wouldn't go behind my back like that. And I'm not angry that you know what the Shadow told you.

[devoutish]

I'll stop bothering you about it, though, eh?

[Though he really does hope Royce will climb that tower again.]

[bywolves]

[ He rests his head on Alfie's shoulder again, sending him a little flicker of gratitude. ]

Thank you. [ That's more genuine. ]

[devoutish]

[He rests his head on top of Royce's.]
