[The message comes early in the morning, a little while after lockdown has ended. England's voice, though businesslike, is obviously not entirely comfortable.]

Good morning. We don't know each other terribly well, though I understand you might have heard about me. [Al and his big metal mouth! Of course, it's public knowledge by now, but that's still a conversation England prefers to have on his own.] I'm sure this message might seem out of place, so if you wish to keep our conversation brief, I won't object.

I just wanted to inquire as to your status after the events of the past few days, if you care to tell me.

Yeah.

[His voice probably answers that inquiry a bit - it's hoarse and weak, and very not well.]

England, right? The man, the country.

[keepscalm]

[Yeah, that doesn't sound good. Still, England is relieved that he even answered.]

Correct. I'm sure it's obvious why I'm concerned.

[devoutish]

Me being your fellow countryman, you mean?

[He hasn't learned about the "protective of his citizens" thing yet.]

[keepscalm]

[England can't help but let out a light scoff, a dry breath that's almost a laugh.] In a manner of speaking, certainly.

Can't say I quite understand the-- country thing.

[There's the sound of a door opening; the crunching of snow.]

That's all right. Most people here don't, it seems. [There's a slight note of exasperation in this.]

It would probably be easiest to think of us as a kind of spirit, connected to our land and our people. [There is a grimace on his face as he speaks next. There's no video feed, but it's audible in his tone.] Or we're supposed to be, anyway.

Bit cut off here, aren't you.

[He understands that all too well.]

[Another almost-laugh, this time bitter.] Indeed.

It's made it rather difficult to keep track.

[A thoughtful sound.] I suppose you could describe it that way. It's a tad more personal, in my opinion. I'm aware of it as if it's a part of myself.

[Alfie makes a noncommittal noise - not really understanding, but not planning to question him further about the logistics of it.]

I figured England was a nickname, at first. Might've been that you were the first British man here, or something.

[keepscalm]

[Now, the laugh has some genuine humour in it; subtle, but present.] Well, that could be the case. I did come with the first group.

Your name is Arthur too, yeah?

Yes. Arthur Kirkland. Nations typically have an alias on file; makes paperwork easier, and tends to put humans more at ease.

[devoutish]

And as your citizen, right, what do you expect from me?

[keepscalm]

Well, typically we appreciate when our citizens represent us with good deeds and some love for where they came from. But truthfully, I don't expect you to do anything for me. You've got your own life and I don't intend to tell you how to run it.

We stand by our citizens, and we protect them at any cost, regardless of if we approve of what they're doing.

[Though usually they do. Biased and all.]

[devoutish]

[H...uh.]

I did serve in the Great War.

[keepscalm]

[The surprise is evident in England's voice.] Did you?

[And then, earnestly, and without even waiting for Alfie to answer:] Thank you. Truly.

Yeah.

But I'm a crime lord, too.

[At least he's... honest...?]

[Yes. That is not ideal, but really, he's probably no Jack the Ripper.]

I was a pirate. [Or privateer? Neither term seems quite accurate for his situation, but pirate has the connotation he's going for.] I don't think I'm in any place to judge.
