Hmm.

[She takes her time to think about it, going through relationships and family times.]

The last Christmas before my grandpa died. I was still little, but I remember sitting on his lap reading Alice In Wonderland in his old, creaky house in upstate New York. There was a fire on and we were snuggled under a blanket, and it was just. Kinda perfect.

Hm, definitely. A lot easier to deal with the cold if it's not... permanent.

I used to like the winter. Can you believe that? I don't think I ever will again.

No, I get that. So did I. Winter in New York is really nice. But I'm so tired of the snow, now, I don't know if I'll ever find it magical ever again.

Do you get much snow there? I've never been.

More so in the early months of the year than at Christmas generally, but yeah, we do, more or less every year. What about London?

Less than in the countryside. It doesn't accumulate very much in the city, and it fast turns muddy and grey.

Upstate is definitely nicer for proper snow.

[She sighs.]

At least, the snow here is beautiful. If it wasn't so deadly...

Hard to notice any beauty when it's inescapable.

Ah, he's - obsessed with beauty. Capturing it, keeping it, observing it, dying for it.

You don't think even he would find this place a bit old?

He probably would keep on finding things to marvel at. New people coming in all the time, that would make him happy. He loves people.

Well, then. He's a more resiliant man than me.

Or maybe he's had an easier life.

It amounts to the same, doesn't it? One causes the other.

Maybe. I do believe some people are able to keep an optimistic worldview even in the most dire of circumstances. But it's a rare thing. Maybe Wilde was like this.

[She pauses, then asks:]

The young can manage it. The kids.

[He pauses, thinking about the next question.]

I liked Twain, when I was growing up.

Never read him much. Only the requisite at school. I had a phase where I read all the Shakespeare plays. I loved the tragedies when I was a teenager.

Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet...? Have you got a favorite?

Always found Othello compelling.
