He probably would keep on finding things to marvel at. New people coming in all the time, that would make him happy. He loves people.

Maybe. I do believe some people are able to keep an optimistic worldview even in the most dire of circumstances. But it's a rare thing. Maybe Wilde was like this.

I liked Twain, when I was growing up.

Never read him much. Only the requisite at school. I had a phase where I read all the Shakespeare plays. I loved the tragedies when I was a teenager.

Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet...? Have you got a favorite?

Always found Othello compelling.

Which one's that, again? I never read Shakespeare myself.

The Moor captain. Betrayal, love, everybody dies at the end. Usual stuff.

Mm. And what makes you pick that one, over all the others?

The main protagonist was black.

That's uncommon, even in the future?

Yep. It very much is. Movies, books, plays... most of it still features a while male main character. Anything with women or people of color is still too rare. And always ends up in controversy. It's... frustrating.

Do you make things for yourself, then?

Do you mean non-white communities? Because, yeah, we do, we try. It's getting better. Slowly. Very slowly.

The outsiders are never gonna care about you. Not as a group. Some might care about you as a person, but if you expect them to care about your culture, you will be disappointed.

I think...I feel like we know that. But it's more about being recognized - being treated as equals. Seeing the work that we do is as good as white people's. That we're capable of beauty, too. That we can be beautiful, too.

[The number of times where that applied to her on a personal level when she was a kid and a teenager, she doesn't want to say. Every teenager goes through a phase where they think they're ugly.]

I wouldn't hold your breath over them seeing you as equals or treating you well, either.

That's the issue. That's what we're fighting for. Surely, one day...
