What do you mean?

[bywolves]

I think about people I care about dying and I don't feel anything. [ He keeps absently stroking at Alfie's arm. ] I've been sick for so long it's hard to remember. Even the transfusion didn't really help.

[devoutish]

It seemed like it helped, from the outside.

[bywolves]

It helped for a while. I guess. Didn't help in the way it needed to. Like one of those bandaid things over a dagger wound.

[devoutish]

Could try medicine. We could ask Watson.

[bywolves]

Do you think there's medicine for this?

[devoutish]

He gave that stuff to Emily. You're worse off than she was, but--

[bywolves]

[ He shrugs a little. ] If you want to ask him, you can.

[devoutish]

Why don't we ask him together?

[bywolves]

Okay. [ Sure, he's fine with that. ]

We can do it tomorrow. He did the seance too.

[devoutish]

Yeah.

[He drops his forehead against Royce's.]

Tomorrow.

[bywolves]

[ Royce wraps his arms around Alfie again, tucking the blankets closer. ]

You should sleep. Real sleep. Not unconsciousness.

[devoutish]

Will you sleep too, then?

[bywolves]

I'll try if you do.

[devoutish]

I will, I promise you.

[bywolves]

Mm. [ He closes his eyes - and then picks up the prayers where he left off at, mumbling them against Alfie's neck. Expectantly. Come on, say them with him. ]

[devoutish]

[He does. His words are more fluid than Royce's, but he says them slowly, keeping pace with the other man.]

[bywolves]

[ He says them all the way to the end. He's stubborn about this. He's keeping up on it. ]

[devoutish]

[By the time they're done, Alfie's words are slurred and muddled with sleep. If Royce wasn't already familiar with the prayers, he likely wouldn't be able to understand well enough to follow along.]

[bywolves]

[ Good. Royce finishes them, and reaches up to pet at Alfie until he's actually asleep. They can comfort each other. If Alfie does fall asleep, Royce won't be far behind. ]

[devoutish]

[Days later, Batman's post goes up, and one can easily imagine how that goes down for people like Alfie and Royce. They're both aware of each other's having seen it - they're in close quarters, and they're both responding; it would be hard not to be aware. It's a few hours before Alfie nudges Royce about it in person, though.

He doesn't need to ask what he thinks.]

He might be worse than the first one. The one who was here months ago.

[bywolves]

Yeah. I think he is. [ Royce says, staring up at the ceiling. He's got his tablet on his chest and he's laying out on his back, eyes closed. ]

If he tries anything with me I'm killing him. I don't care what the consequences are. Don't have time for this.

[devoutish]

If he tries anything with you, I'll stand by your side.

[But Alfie's pretty sure it's more likely that he himself will be target. Royce's name had barely been mentioned, but he'd been specifically been warned about Alfie.]

[bywolves]

[ They're practically extensions of each other at this point - Royce thinks it goes without saying that if Bruce tries anything with Alfie, it means he's fucking with Royce. ]

I'm actually angry. [ Royce says, a bit amazed. ]

[devoutish]

Good.

[Alfie can't help but smile at that.]

Anger, that's better than nothing, isn't it.
