Yeah. Think that might be nice. It'll only take a minute.

[devoutish]

[And while they're there, Alfie takes the opportunity to grab them a second bottle of wine.

Over at the rec center, he flops down on the couch, looking expectantly at Royce.]

Now, about this DVD player.

[You're not really going to make him do it, are you, bro?]

[bywolves]

What about it? [ Royce hums, pushing his damp hair back out of his face as he sits down in front of the player. ]

[devoutish]

How do you start it up? I don't see a crank.

[bywolves]

There's buttons. [ He shifts out of the way to gesture at the power button, so Alfie can see it. ] You press a button to turn it on, and then another to get it to play.

[devoutish]

Ah--

[He presses the power button, and the machine whirs to life.]

There we go, look at that.

[There's a disc already in, apparently, because the menu for The Fellowship of the Ring pops up. Afie, not looking up at the screen, doesn't notice yet.]

We've got to decide what to play, first.

[bywolves]

[ Looks like nobody has touched it since the last time Royce was here, because that's the movie that Monty put in, as well. Royce snorts a little when it comes up on screen. ]

I watched about fifteen minutes of this one. [ He says, quieter. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie lifts his head, squinting at it. He's less surprised by the color and excellent picture quality than he would have been coming straight from home - the tablets had helped acclimate him to that.]

Any good?

[bywolves]

It's alright. [ He shrugs. ] I stopped it because I didn't want to watch it with Navarro.

[devoutish]

Why? Was he pissing you off?

[bywolves]

No, but I don't know him.

This is the film that House used to insult me. I didn't want to watch it with a stranger.

[devoutish]

[Alfie, totally unfamiliar with the series in any form, frowns.]

Which insult?

[He hadn't known that any of them came from a film, but it's not really a surprise - House is really into popular culture stuff.]

[bywolves]

[ He wouldn't have known if Davesprite hadn't told him. ]

Elfagorn.

[devoutish]

[Ah. That one.]

We don't have to watch it. We can find something else.

[bywolves]

No, I'm interested. [ Royce says, glancing back at Alfie. ] I want to know how he made the leap. I just didn't want to do it with someone I don't trust.

[devoutish]

[Makes sense to him.]

Yeah, all right. Have you figured out who or what an Elfagorn is, yet?

[bywolves]

No. I don't think I watched far along enough to figure that out. [ He might not even make the connection, honestly. ]

[devoutish]

Shall we, then?

[Alfie bends back down over the DVD player.]

If these buttons have got words on them, I can't read them.

[bywolves]

[ Royce snorts. ] I've got it, old man.

[ There's a very distant thought of sure wish Alfie would let me wish for his eyes to be better but he discards it immediately. No matter how well intentioned it might be, he knows both of them have issues about their bodies being changed without their permission.

He hits the play button, and climbs up to the couch to settle down on it. ]

[devoutish]

[And Alfie settles next to him, leaning a little. The first time someone visibly non-human shows up - in the first few minutes during the prologue, in fact - he looks at Royce with surprise.]

House knows about this film?

[bywolves]

[ Royce glances at him. ]

He must've. Davesprite was the one who told me the name of the film he was referencing. [ It hasn't clicked yet, that there are what appear to be non-human actors. He's so distracted by the film being a thing in the first place, and by all the associations he's got with it, that it doesn't register. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah, but--

[Alfie gestures to the screen, where a battlefield close-up of a visibly non-human Elrond is shown. Really, the idea of special effects wouldn't be unbelievable to Alfie at all - but since he's actually met non-humans, the possibility of non-human actors jumps to mind before the possibility that human actors were somehow made to look flawlessly eleven.]

[bywolves]

[ A beat as Royce watches Elrond. ]

... He's an elf. [ What... Royce is clueless about special effects and films in general so he's very confused. ] Maybe House's world has elves?

[devoutish]

This doesn't look like Earth at all. Look at what they're fighting against.

[The orcs.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce rubs at his face. ]

I don't know what Earth looks like normally. [ A beat. ] Or how films work. Are they like recordings on the tablets? They actually happened, I mean.

Davesprite indicated to me that some of the stories were just stories.
