I figured you did. You've made up with them, then?

Mostly, yes. Enough to spend a night with them.

[devoutish]

[Alfie bites back on the question: Both of them? At the same time?]

Yeah. Well, I'm glad for it, mate.

[bywolves]

[ It was an adventure. ]

Yeah. Me too. Sorry I wasn't home earlier.

[devoutish]

Nah, don't be sorry for it. You deserve a bit of fun.

[bywolves]

[ There's a very faint bit of red that settles across his cheeks. ]

I was surprised. It was Valentine's Day. I didn't even know what that was until a week ago.

[devoutish]

Ah, right, it's some Catholic thing. Couples us it.

[bywolves]

Catholic thing? That's a religion, right?

[devoutish]

Yeah, but I expect that's not why they celebrate it.

[He lolls his head back, looking at Royce.]

Are you lot a trio, then?

[bywolves]

[ Yeah, he was gonna say he's pretty sure neither of them are particularly religious. As for the question, Royce shakes his head, looking at Alfie briefly before looking away. ]

No. If there's a place for me there, it's for that purpose only. I don't want to expect anything.

[devoutish]

[Aw. Alfie lightly touches his shoulder.]

You could tell them that you want more.

[bywolves]

I don't know if I do. [ Royce murmurs, with a sigh. ] It seems exhausting. I care for both of them but they're - high maintenance.

The thought is nice, but both of them struggle with jealousy issues as it is.

[devoutish]

Mm.

[He leans forward, stealing Royce's teacup; his own is still cooling in the kitchen.]

All right. Just so long as you aren't unhappy.

[bywolves]

[ Royce doesn't mind. He closes his eyes. ]

I'm unhappy, but I don't think that can be fixed. [ He rests his head on Alfie's shoulder. ] I think I'll always be unhappy to be the third wheel. Not much to be done about it.

It won't weigh on me forever.

[devoutish]

Good.

[Just gonna keep sipping Royce's tea; don't mind if he does.]

You're not mine, you know. My third wheel.

[bywolves]

I know. [ Royce tilts his head up to kiss Alfie on the cheek, and then rests his head back down. ]

I haven't felt that way with you for a long time.

[devoutish]

It bears repeating. And I know you like to hear it.

[bywolves]

I do. I appreciate it. [ There's a small smile on his face. ] If I ever feel unwanted, I know that I came come to you.

[devoutish]

[Wordlessly, Alfie touches his own chest, the way Royce sometimes does.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce lets him feel the sensation of peace and comfort, staying right where he is. ]

[devoutish]

Tell me what else you've been up to?

[Alfie murmurs.]

I've been preoccupied with grief; I haven't asked.

[bywolves]

Not a lot. [ Royce sighs. ] Spent a lot of time at the bath house. Met some new people here and there. You've met K, haven't you?

[devoutish]
