[ Royce growls, but - he doesn't make any move to argue further. He's going to be so pissed later. If Alfie risks himself here, Royce is not going to forget it, in a lot of ways. ]

[devoutish]

Royce.

[He knows how he'd feel if their places were switched, and it's what makes him hesitate. They've been in positions like this before, but switched, and he'd felt fully prepared to stop traveling with Royce if he took too many risks - not because of any sort of power play, but because he couldn't stand the idea of losing him to his own recklessness.

He doesn't want Royce to feel that way now.]

Echoing. [ Royce reminds him, angrily. He carefully sets Gwen down to go over and pick up the tablet. He can't get out what he wants to get out and he's too impatient to pick through the words he knows to elaborately put together a sentence that makes sense. ]

No. You don't listen. Fighting me. [ The cloak jitters anxiously. He's still missing words and he doesn't know how to get his point across - ] Don't walk and lose. Stop. Stop going not dangerous lockdown. Then not far.

[ He doesn't have until, and he's mad about it. ]

[ Royce throws his tablet against the wall, because his monster brain is incapable of being patient. ]

No. [ Is that clear enough, Alfie? It's louder than anything he's ever said in his life, he thinks. ]

[devoutish]

[There's the sound of a bag thunking to the floor as it's dropped, and the whispery sound of cloth sliding against the wall as Alfie sinks to the floor.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce has to take a bit to calm down. It's a good five minutes of him climbing the walls, and then ten of him carefully, carefully arranging Gwen so she looks like she's asleep. He wipes the blood away using the fabric of his cloak - using himself. And then he finally goes to the tablet and picks it up. ]

I walk. [ Royce says, quietly. ] Not danger for lockdown. Come then.

[devoutish]

Yeah.

[Alfie's hunkered down in Royce's cloak, hood pulled up. No wonder Royce likes it. It's cozy in there.]

Keep your tablet on. Often. I don't want you on your own now.

[bywolves]

Yeah. [ He doesn't want to be alone. But he also needs to call other people, so. ] I walk. Tablet off.

Need tablet on more somebody. [ Sorry, that's the best he can do. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah. [ He'd tell him he was going to call Karkat but he has no idea how to make that work. A beat, and as he passes the door, he taps his claws in the sound of a, and then b, in Morse. ]

On your tablet. [ Royce is pretty sure, a long time ago, Alfie took a picture of Royce's morse code cheat sheet. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah. I'll find it, mate.

Can you get words from old conversations? Recordings?

[bywolves]

[ Huh. He didn't even think about that. He pulls up an old conversation - tries using a word he doesn't have in his head. Nothing happens. He tries something with Alfie - nothing happens.

Royce growls low in frustration. ]

[devoutish]

[He sighs.]

[bywolves]

[ He makes a noise that's basically representative of it's okay. It isn't. But there's nothing else for him to do. ]

Tablet off. For a while. [ He tells Alfie, quietly. He just - wants to walk in the snow and think. Work through what he did to Gwen. He needs silence. ]

[devoutish]

Yeah. Call again soon.

[bywolves]

Yeah. [ Royce wishes he could say be safe or - something, something other than that, but he can't. So instead, he just murmurs mate and hangs up. ]
