I - what? [ Oh. He blinks, and then: ] I haven't tried it. Do you like it?

[devoutish]

Very much. Your sweetbread is also excellent. Try your bit of babka before it gets cold, eh?

[bywolves]

Alright. [ He has no problem with that. Opening the tin, Royce tries a bite of the babka. Usually he's not a fan of overly sweet things, but this isn't so much. It's good. It's warm,, and he lets out a little sigh. ]

... That's really good.

[devoutish]

Really?

[Alfie actually smiles, a little.]

Good, yeah; good. Have some more, if you like.

[bywolves]

I'm fine with this piece. [ He doesn't want to take too much - he understands that sharing is part of it, and he's fine with that, but he also wants Alfie to have something really good for himself. ]

But I do like it. Is it your favorite?

[devoutish]

Yeah. Yeah, one of 'em.

[He takes another, smaller piece, and holds it out questioningly.]

You're sure?

[bywolves]

[ A beat, and then he takes the piece, munching on it. ]

You keep the rest. Enjoy it.

[devoutish]

I am. I'm enjoying you enjoying it, also.

[bywolves]

[ He smiles a little, nudging Alfie with his hip as they walk. ]

Never thought you were so big on sharing.

[devoutish]

I'll share with you.

[bywolves]

Mm. I know. It's mutual.

[devoutish]

[He knows, too. He leans over and rests his cheek on Royce's head as they walk.]

[bywolves]

[ He finishes the babka, and settles an arm around Alfie's waist as they walk. He's going to try and spoil Alfie for the rest of the night - he isn't too bad off right now, but Royce is... concerned. ]

[devoutish]

This one is gonna be awful too, I think.

[Alfie murmurs.]

I'm sorry. I'm-- sorry.

[bywolves]

Don't be. I have you. I'll take care of you tonight if you need it. [ Something he's offered to maybe three people in his life, ever. ]

When we get to the next building, I'll blow up the air mattress. You relax.

[devoutish]

I shouldn't've brought you here. Not now.

[bywolves]

Better now than when my poisoning is active. I wouldn't be functioning right now if it was.

[devoutish]

No, instead I brought you here when all the emotions are new and overwhelming to you.

[There's a beat, and then he forces out:]

It's worse than I remembered. Must've blocked it out a bit.

[bywolves]

[ He murmurs a it's fine, pulling Alfie closer. ]

The first time you came through was to get me. Had other things on your mind. Must've blocked it out, yeah.

[devoutish]

Mm. Wasn't paying attention to much else. I did bury them, though.

[bywolves]

A lot happened after. [ Royce says, frowning. ] There isn't anything happening now, so you feel the weight of it.

[devoutish]

[Alfie closes his eyes, nodding against Royce's head, and says nothing. They're almost to the building's door now.]

[bywolves]

I've got you. [ Royce tells him, supporting him. ] We're almost there.

[devoutish]

I'm not a fucking child.

[But he doesn't sound like he's chastising Royce for taking care of him - on the contrary, he genuinely appreciates that. Instead, he's trying to bolster himself; to ready himself for what's to come.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce wrinkles his nose at the phrasing, but he understands that Alfie's appreciative. It silences him, though, and he stays that way even as he helps Alfie into the building and deposits him against a wall. He doesn't need to talk to dump all forty of their blankets in Alfie's lap and shove a thermos full of water in his hand. ]
