... Okay.

[ It doesn't matter, really. Sure. Why not? Whatever it is might be gross, but it's a distraction. Royce doesn't really move, just looks up at the can, trying to summon up the will to want to grab the thing. He doesn't, just sighs out a shivery sound and looks up at Alfie. The tears are still coming - less now, but they're dripping down his face. ]

[devoutish]

How do you think this opens up?

[He nudges the can into Royce's hands, leaning his still-dry cheek against Royce's teary one.]

You're good at picking locks. Eh? Pick this one for me.

[bywolves]

[ Give him a task. Yeah. That's good. Royce breathes out a sigh - presses their faces together a little, just for the reassurance, and then pulls back just enough to look down at the can, staring at it. He runs his fingers over it, trying to figure it out.

It has to do with the pop-top, he thinks. He picks at it almost absently, trying to lift it, and when it gives, he frowns. A beat, then, quietly: ]

I think you pull on this.

[devoutish]

Looks like it, yeah. But I couldn't get my nail under it.

[Granted, he'd only tried for 0.5 seconds, but.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce digs his finger under the pin. It hurts a little. He likes that he can feel that. For a moment, he stares at the top, and then he puts it on its side so it won't leak, and pulls hard on the top. The soda can makes that crack-hshhhh sound, and bubbles up. ]

[devoutish]

Oof. Look at that, it's got carbonation to it.

[bywolves]

It has what?

[devoutish]

Little bubbles. The taste will have a fizz to it.

[bywolves]

Oh. [ He stares down at it, and then puts his finger in where some of it has spilled over the top, so he can taste it. ]

[devoutish]

What do you think?

[bywolves]

... Sweet. [ He mumbles, wrinkling his nose. ] It's really sweet.

[devoutish]

How's the fizz? More than beer, less than beer--?

[bywolves]

More? Different. It's not foam. [ He reaches to taste it again, and makes a face. ]

[devoutish]

Not good?

[bywolves]

I can't... I can't get over how sweet all the things here are. [ Blegh. He sniffs, involuntary, the kind that happens post-crying. ] Candies and this and the things at the convenience stores.

[devoutish]

Mm. I like sweet things, but they're different from the sweet stuff at home. They don't taste like real sugar.

[bywolves]

Yeah. [ He pushes the can at Alfie. ] I don't like sweets very much.

[devoutish]

[He takes a sip, then makes a face of his own.]

Most of the special things I've got are sweets. Sweets or tea.

[bywolves]

I like candy okay. [ He's gone back to staring down at the mattress. It's really hard for him to put effort into the conversation but he's trying, really hard. ] I like tea. I like tea here a lot.

[devoutish]

I'll make you tea. Tonight, tomorrow, whenever you like.

[But first, he pulls out a little jar of chocolate cake topping. Candy enough for you, Royce?]

[bywolves]

Are you trying to spoil me with food? [ It's meant to be a joke, but his voice is flat. ]

[devoutish]

Yes.

[Duh, Royce.]

[bywolves]

I'm not hungry. [ Royce mumbles, but. He holds out his hand for the jar anyway. Alfie's trying to help. ]

[devoutish]

Sweets aren't eaten when you're hungry. They're eaten when you need them.

[He passes over the jar. Royce can take as much or as little as he likes.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce snorts a little at that, but. He takes the jar, and scoops his finger into it. He eats a scoop or two - it's mostly out of obligation, but it's not like it's a terrible one. ]
