When your modern medicine gives me a robotic heart and lungs to help me live forever, I'll find you on the street at age six or seven and give you a shilling.

A shilling doesn't get you very far in my day. Although, I suppose... hold onto a few from the 1920s. Those'll be worth a lot to coin collectors someday.

How far does a shilling take you?

Nowhere, honestly. We don't use shillings anymore.

Have you switched currencies entirely?

[jumpthegun]

No, we've still got the pound, but everything's on the decimal system. You've got some weird mechanics back in the day, I think? It's a hundred pennies make a pound now. No shillings. There was talk about switching over to the Euro--that's what everyone else uses on the Continent as part of the common market--but I doubt that'll happen any time soon.

You've got a common market now, too? Why would you want that?

Well, it makes everything cheaper for one thing. And we've got the European Union properly. It's not just the market that's integrated. There's free movement between Euro countries for work and the like.

Is it all of Europe?

[Ew.]

A lot of it. Switzerland's not part of it and some of the eastern bloc countries are still getting their economies and governments in order to be able to apply for membership.

How long until the entire fucking world goes that way, do you think? One big country, one government.

Well, I reckon we'll have to wait until the alien invasion for that to happen. God knows I'm not gonna vote for a unification with Russia or China.

What are they up to, then?

Just the usual. They've got dictators ruling them, human rights violations, try to crush any political opposition or signs of a free press. They make their people suffer to the benefit of a few elites.

Mm... Yeah. Russia wasn't a great place for a lot of reasons back then, and it's got a lot of problems now, too. I mean, it's not everyone that's horrible, mind. It's just the people in power.

It's never everyone, is it. But it's enough.

I try to keep an open mind when I meet people. But, yeah... overall, you get the impression, and it's not-good. But, yeah. Part of the reason the EU exists is a counterbalance to Russia and its power. China, as well.
