Does it? Does living because I feel too guilty not to sound like a good thing to you? [ He asks, a little ragged. ]

Living sounds like a good thing.

[bywolves]

[ His breathing is ragged too - he doesn't think he needs to answer this one, because he knows Alfie knows his thoughts on it. He just stays silent. He feels like he's drowning. ]

[devoutish]

Keep hold of my hand.

[Metaphorically, he means, but if Royce reaches back to take ahold of him physically too, he won't pull away.]

Don't let go.

[bywolves]

[ He does physically reach back to hold onto Alfie, face hidden. He's started shivering again, a bit violently, and it comes out in the way that he stutters. ]

I can't go anywhere. I don't have it in me. The sun is gone.

[devoutish]

The sun's hidden. It's not gone entirely.

[bywolves]

There's static where it was.

Probably was never there in the first place.

[devoutish]

I'm talking about the sun in you. That's the only sun I care about.

[bywolves]

[ Oh. Royce drags in an unsteady, wet sounding breath. ]

I don't want to go anywhere. I just - the hotel. Let's go to the hotel. [ Like they did in the future, fifty or a hundred years from now, when Alfie was old and frail and Royce was the same. ]

[devoutish]

[The hotel is big, is Alfie's first thought. There are so many rooms to hide in... and so many rooms to be trapped in.]

You want a proper bed?

[bywolves]

Yeah. A bed. [ He's not even thinking about the House anomaly - it's not going to chase them forever, it'll get bored. It was still House once, after all. ]

[devoutish]

What else?

[bywolves]

[ God, don't do this. He goes quiet. He doesn't have it in him to make something up, to fake it. The fact that he's talking in somewhat coherent sentences is about all he can manage right now, with how little he's eaten and how cold he is. ]

[devoutish]

Just beds, then? Just sleep?

[bywolves]

Y-yeah. [ He manages, with a sigh. ] Yeah.

[devoutish]

Do you want bread first?

[bywolves]

[ A beat. He likes bread. ] Okay.

[devoutish]

We're close, you know. Just next door. We could leave our things here for a few hours.

[bywolves]

[ He opens his mouth and then shuts it. Swallows hard. ]

Yeah. We can go.

[devoutish]

Wil you let me carry you, so you can rest?

[bywolves]

Okay. [ He's too tired to argue. He doesn't think he can stand up, either, so. ] Yeah.

[devoutish]

Okay.

[Pause.]

I'm not gonna stop trying for you, mate.

[bywolves]

[ That makes Alfie a better person than Royce, Royce thinks, because he's stopped trying entirely. ]

You haven't given up yet. [ Royce agrees quietly. ]

[devoutish]

No. I only worry you'll end up hating me for it.
