[ Royce only has a small amount of hope that they'll go home. And really - it's only because of Mercy. He has to, for her.

Royce half-drags, half-leans on Alfie over to the other side of the room, slowly but surely. ]

[devoutish]

Let's move the blankets.

[He wants to bed down in their little nest as far away from the door as possible.]

[bywolves]

Mm. [ Royce leans down to grab the blanket nest, and just ends up grabbing a pile of things and staggering over as far away from the door as he can get. Oof. He's dizzy. ]

[devoutish]

You'll have a nasty hangover.

[Worried that Royce is going to fall over, Alfie reaches for him again.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce leans on Alfie for just a second. ]

Mmhm. [ He knows. Mildly: ] Might want to avoid talking to me much tomorrow. Bite your head off.

[devoutish]

I'll wake you up to feed you water. It'll do you good.

[bywolves]

Are we staying here?

[devoutish]

Yeah.

[Slowly, he tries to lower them both down onto the floor. The anomaly, quieter but still audible, lets out another wail, and Alfie shivers.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce is fine with that. He slides down to the floor, curling up in the blanket nest, making sure both of them have enough pillows and blankets. Closing his eyes, Royce settles on his side, back to Alfie, but still close enough to almost be touching. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie doesn't say anything for a few minutes, but then:]

I think it was quieter when I talked to it. I could--

[But he cuts himself off.]

[bywolves]

No. [ Royce says, firmly, not turning around. ] Stop torturing yourself.

[devoutish]

[With a sigh, he drops his head down onto his pillow.]

This isn't like me.

[bywolves]

[ Royce does turn, now, rolls on his back. ]

You're sick. Drunk. This place rubs off thick skin. [ He sighs, slow. ] Have to keep going.

[devoutish]

I'm glad to hear you say that. Been worrying about you.

[bywolves]

[ He's quiet for a while. ]

Tired. But I have to make it back for her.

[devoutish]

I wish I could meet her. Your kid.

[bywolves]

Yeah. Wish you could too. She'd like you.

I hope you don't get the chance to. [ Because that'd mean she was here, or that Alfie wasn't able to go home. ]

[devoutish]

I could visit.

[Since they're talking about things that he's pretty sure will never come to pass, why not?]

[bywolves]

You could. [ He maybe smiles just a little. ] You'd get a kick out of seeing the elves follow me around.

[devoutish]

Yeah. Your Majesty.

[bywolves]

[ Royce just lazily reaches over and whacks Alfie on the chest. Gently. ]

[devoutish]

I'd make a good royal bodyguard. It was what I did when I was young, for the gang.

[bywolves]

Rather be your bodyguard, I think.

[devoutish]

What if I had a gun? Or-- what've you got on your world, swords? No, I can't fight with a sword.

[bywolves]

If you had a gun, you'd be far more effective than any of the guards I have. But yes, swords and knives. Crossbows.
