I do. She cares about him. I know there's that business in the Nonary Game that they talked about when we were underground, but if that's true, everything I've seen says she's trying to atone for what happened.

And you think that makes it all right.

I think it makes it safe for him to be with her. If you're hellbent on making up for something you screwed up... you avoid screwing up that way again come hell or high water. I dunno what the circumstances were. I dunno what things she hasn't told House. I'm willing to bet there's more to the story.

He's not my kid. But if he was, she wouldn't be allowed anywhere near him.

You think she's just going to go mad and attack him one day?

Then what do you think is going to happen? She's going to get careless? She wasn't being careless. She's not the only person who's had one of the kids run off of them. Look at Frisk with Toriel.

I think there's more to that story, Alfie. I don't know what it is. I'm not going to forgive her for it. I don't know why she did what she did or even all of what she did, but what I know right now is that she cares desperately about keeping Quark safe and alive.

I don't know her. I don't know she's lying. But I do not trust her.

Alfie, she saw my dreams, like you did. But they were... it wasn't like what you saw. It was Sherlock dying over and over, Moriarty torturing me with it. She's never breathed a word about what she saw to anyone but me. She's kept Estinien threatening her life quiet until I pried it out of her with everything short of a crowbar. She's... she's so hurt and scared...

[And that makes him want to help her. That vulnerability makes his heart all but bleed for her. He wants to trust her so that she'll trust him to save her.]

Someone's got to. She won't stand up for herself. She's pushing everything away. She's going to kill herself inside before this place gets to her.

She is. She doesn't want me to go near her, with Quark or not. She doesn't want anyone near her. She told me not to do anything after she told me Estinien was threatening her. She's damaged and she's scared about Quark finding out for sure that she's a robot. I dunno why, but she's terrified of that.

[devoutish]

But you're pushing anyway, even though you don't know the situation. You're flying blind, Watson.

I know she's alone and she shouldn't be after losing two people, both of whom she was close to and one of whom she considers her charge. At least I had Fiona.

[devoutish]

What if it were me, then? If I just wanted to pull away from everything and everyone and hide. Would you just let me?

[He thinks the answer might be 'yes.' Fiona would probably be 'no,' though.]

If you said you wanted to be left alone, I would, yeah. It's a man's right not to be badgered every fucking minute of every fucking day.

You think because I don't let you get away with some things means I'm gonna call into question everything you do.

You told me you badger people when they're making stupid decisions that are going to end up hurting them. And this is hurting Quark. It's not just about Luna.

Fiona wouldn't let me...

[The scuff of his foot along the ground is almost audible in his tone.]

Staying away from people for a while isn't gonna hurt anybody.

It's going to hurt her. And it's going to upset Quark, especially when she refuses to tell him why. He already has enough to deal with here.

She should tell him why. Let him be aware of what he's dealing with.
