I just don't want to encroach on much needed rest. It's not a knock on myself. Especially after today, I'm just - exhausted.

[She runs a hand through her hair.]

But - consider it duly noted. What have you got on your mind? Home?

Always. Yeah. We would have celebrated Purim a few days ago.

[nursetemple]

I have never heard of that holiday. Tell me about it?

[devoutish]

It's a festival of joy.

[And so he sounds a little wry when he talks about it now.]

We celebrate being saved from a Persian vizier who was gonna slaughter all the Jews in the kingdom.

[nursetemple]

Oh. Well.

[She bites lightly on one of her nails, worrying at it.]

I'd say you should be spreading that around on the network, try and cheer people up, but that's not really your style.

[devoutish]

I don't think it would matter to the rest of them. We've only got one other Jew here.

I don't know. I think any occasion to celebrate something that isn't doom and gloom might be appreciated.

There's got to be ways to balance things. I feel like some people - understandably - get so down on themselves that they can't see anything good anymore. Think there is none. No joy, no love, no friendship, no hope.

[She pauses, her voice soft when she speaks next.]

I want to cling to some of the good, you know? And I'm sure I'm not the only one. But there has to be some light somewhere, sometimes.

[devoutish]

But would would a holiday that they've never heard of and that means nothing to them really do that?

[nursetemple]

Possibly not. But someone could interpret it as a time to share joy for your community, and want to do so themselves. It's the sentiment behind the holiday, I guess?

[She imagines people sharing happy stories on the network. Reminding themselves that they are a community, here, too. It would be nice.

She doesn't expect Alfie to do anything, and she doesn't want to disrespect a religion so she won't either. But it's a hopeful thought.]

Gentiles at home, they don't really care about Jews and Jewish traditions. Not sure why it'd be any different here.

As I said, I think it would be more about the spirit behind the holiday than the holiday itself, or Judaism.

[Claire pauses for a moment.]

Something here, or something at home?

[One would be a lot harder.]

Either or. Just. Something that would make you smile as you retell it.

[devoutish]

[First he has to think of a story that isn't crime-related or violent. Family stories are usually safe for that.]

Men in my community often have beards. Some like mine, some longer. My father's brother has a great big one - three or four inches long.

[He'd told Tifa it was six inches long once, but he'd been exaggerating.]

I've got strong memories of being nine or ten, watching him sit on the sofa with my younger sister, letting her play with his beard. She learned to braid hair on that beard.

[There is indeed a smile in his voice as he talks.]

Are you close to your sister?

[She's smiling, too.]

Yeah, close enough. She's six years younger than I am.

My sister's younger too. She's the golden child.

[devoutish]

The one who kept going to church?

Yeah. And got married, had a kid before she was 30. Did everything right.

[devoutish]

How much younger is she?

3 years. She's 31. I love her to bits.

[devoutish]

Do you see her often? Is she in your city?

[nursetemple]

She lives in Brooklyn. We try to catch up regularly, but lately, things have been...complicated for me, and we didn't get to as much.

What about you? You see your sister often?

[devoutish]

[Alfie has a vague awareness of Brooklyn being a neighborhood of New York City, but that's about it.]

She lives in Camden Town, yeah. A few blocks from me, with her husband and kids.
