[ Royce takes another drink. It doesn't matter. He wants to care, but he doesn't. ]

I'll be close by when they decide they're going to bait you to them so they can kill you.

That's not gonna work on me. Ecks is the only one trying, and she's clumsy at it.

[ He takes another drink almost angrily. He still doesn't like talking about dying. Maybe he wants to, sometimes, but actually doing it scares the shit out of him. At least he feels something, here. ]

[Alfie sinks his feet down a little further into his bucket, and he does swipe the bottle, if only to take another drink himself.]

[ Royce tucks the blanket around his own feet in. ]

The one earlier. [ He knows Alfie will know why it bothered him. ]

[Alfie just nods, his chin drooping onto his chest.]

[ Royce is silent for a while. ]

I should be more upset about it. [ Royce says, after that while. ] I don't feel anything at all. Empty, more than anything.

[devoutish]

There comes a time when you just can't anymore. Yeah. You're all tapped out.

[He eases out of the bucket, careful not to tip it over, and nods to Royce.]

Take it. It's still warm.

[bywolves]

[ Royce stares down at the bucket for a moment. ]

You need it more.

[devoutish]

The bucket's not big enough to share. Go on, before it's cold.

[He's already drying his own feet off.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce gingerly puts his feet in the water, and actually shivers a little at the feeling of warmth. It's been ages since he's felt warm water. Weeks. Months? ]

I miss home. [ Royce says after a moment, mostly into his knees. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie leans into his shoulder a little more.]

The Rose and the Thorn. There was a back room, where Hadrian and I took our meals. It was quiet. You could hear people talking but it wasn't so loud that you couldn't have your own conversation. [ This is all stuff from a long time ago. He misses home, and he misses this, his life before, when Gwen was alive and he wasn't in charge of people who would kill him if he weren't. ] It burned down. There's nothing there, now.

The tavern connected to the brothel. Brothel was Medford House.

Did you kill the ones who burned it down?

[bywolves]

No. An army burned it down. The town was in ruins.

War?

Mm. War. Long story. Medford hasn't recovered. Or maybe it has. I don't have any reason to go there any longer.
