You'll be glad to know you succeed a striking amount of the time. If you could tone that down a notch and ramp up the funny and charming parts, I wouldn't be put off, though.

[How have they ended up here? John had started this conversation on the verge of a breakdown. Now, he's calmed down and is joking with the other man. Alfie really does remind him of Sherlock in a number of ways.]

I have faith you can find the right balance to strike not to turn me even more prematurely gray.

Managed to corner Taylor, as well, by the way. He told me he just wants to get home and go back to what he was doing there, and that's why he's playing nice. He also doesn't want heroes like the Avengers or Batman chasing after him. He said he doesn't get along with heroes. He's fine with me or Alphonse watching him, though, if it comes down to it. Apparently.

[He's still kind of annoyed how Sylar had phrased that.]

I told him if he steps out of line again, I'll be telling everyone what he is. I don't care how useful Sherlock thinks he is. He doesn't get a free license from me to do as he likes.

[And neither do you, Alfie. But he... trusts Alfie more at this point.]

If you told everyone, what do you think he would do?

I asked him that and he said he wouldn't do anything except try to stay away from the superheroes. He'll take whatever judgment the people here pass on him provided he's given the luxury of not having to be led around by a man in a bat costume or the like.

I can't tell if he's being honest, though. He's a very good actor.

Do you trust his word despite that?

I trust that Sherlock and I are in a position to handle him if he needs handling.

[devoutish]

I think I'm the one who ought to be worrying about you, anyway. You seem to be going for the record. I'd appreciate you stopping that. It's bad for my heart.

That's another downside to text, isn't it. I could be bleeding out again right now and you'd never know it.

[John breathes a small sigh of relief.]

Why is that? Let's you gauge people more easily than text so you know if they're bleeding out?

I've got to make sure you're not hiding your injuries somehow, yeah?

[He pauses, then gives the real answer.]

Letters, text, that's for arranging a meeting, or when you've got no other option. A proper conversation should let you hear a man's voice, see a man's face.

You could always just ask Bucky. He seems keen to share when I'm injured. [His delivery for that is entirely deadpan.]

And just know that Sherlock hates talking on the phone. If he could manage to communicate purely through text, I think he would.

Mm. And why is that? Because he's got something to hide, and he doesn't trust his voice not to give it away?

He says it's faster, and I'm pretty sure he just learned to hate talking on the phone because of his brother.

[devoutish]

His brother?

Mycroft. He's basically like Sherlock, but imagine someone older, colder, even more observant, and basically running the British government. Mycroft has manners, but he's like a supervill- Y'know, I think you'd get along with him, actually. He's a businessman. Sherlock can't stand him.

[And with good reason, as far as John is concerned given what happened with Moriarty's lie.]

I don't like him much, myself. Hadn't been living with Sherlock a day and the arsehole kidnapped me and tried to pay me to spy on Sherlock for him. All without actually telling me who he was.
