[Alfie gives his hand a little tug. C'mere.]

[bywolves]

[ He slides down the rock a bit to move closer, looking unsure. ]

[devoutish]

[He keeps tugging, like he's reeling Royce in.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce sighs, and slides down off the rock entirely to stand in front of him. Now he's shorter than Alfie again, instead of having that slight height advantage. The worst. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie wraps an arm around him, if Royce will let him, pulling him close and resting his chin on the top of his head.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce does let him. He rests his head against Alfie's chest, and brings his own arm around and up to hold at the back of Alfie's shirt. It's easy. This is so easy to do. ]

[devoutish]

Sometimes, mate, I don't understand either of us.

[Alfie murmurs quietly.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce lets out a quiet huff of a laugh. ]

Yeah. I guess I don't either.

[devoutish]

It'll be all right, though.

[He nudges Royce in the ribs.]

I do believe that. I always have.

[bywolves]

[ He just sinks into Alfie, tired. ]

It will be eventually. [ They'll figure it out. Hesitantly: ] Do you understand why I was angry?

[devoutish]

Yeah. But I don't think I did much wrong, either. I don't think either of us did.

[bywolves]

[ There's a sort of twist of something - defeat, maybe, and then Royce sighs again. ]

Yeah, all right.

[devoutish]

Royce.

[He nudges his nose into Royce's hair.]

[bywolves]

Alfie.

[devoutish]

I dunno. I don't like you saying that when you don't mean it, that's all.

[bywolves]

You don't understand why I was angry. Why I get angry. There's no point in arguing about it.

[devoutish]

Why do you think I don't understand?

[bywolves]

Because nothing is ever just because you said or did something, it's because I did something to make you do something in return. So we're both in the wrong. You never start it.

That's why I get angry with you, sometimes, and yet you still do it.

[devoutish]

I didn't mean that you started anything, Royce.

[bywolves]

Then what. What did you mean?

[devoutish]

I meant just what I said. I don't think either of us have done much wrong tonight.

[bywolves]

Would you mind explaining yourself better so that I don't need to drag every bit of this out of you inch by agonizing inch? I'm tired, Alfie.

[ He doesn't mean to get snippy, he's just - frustrated, and it's simmering. ]

[devoutish]

I honestly don't know what needs to be explained, Royce. I think we both conducted ourselves well enough tonight; how can I explain that more?

[bywolves]

If we didn't do anything wrong, then why did we have a fight? I don't - understand what you're talking about -- gods, never mind. Never mind.

[devoutish]

We had a fight, but we explained our thoughts and feelings as well as we could-- despite considerable difficulty and embarrassment and all. We worked it out. I'm proud of us, mate. I'm proud of the both of us.
