I'm not saying you can never worry about me. I'm saying I'll give you the chance to do it less.

Yeah. But I'll still worry just as much, mate.

[bywolves]

[ Royce just sighs, dropping his head on Alfie's shoulder. ]

[devoutish]

Doesn't bother me. I think I worry about you exactly enough.

[bywolves]

[ But it bothers Royce a little - he just doesn't want to say anything about it. He stays where he is, feeling defeated, mostly. He feels almost restless with how much negativity is bubbling in his stomach, and he doesn't know what to do with himself.

Like he could cry, maybe, but the tears won't come. Maybe he should go walk. Swim against the current of the ocean until he's too tired to do anything else. Something. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie shudders again, and lets out a restless sigh, absently kneading his fingers against his pillow.]

I'm not frustrated with you.

[He says, clarifying something that he isn't sure needs to be clarified.]

[bywolves]

I know you aren't. I'm frustrated with myself. [ He mutters against Alfie's shoulder. ] You're fine.

[devoutish]

Frustration's better than emotionlessness.

[bywolves]

It's a hard habit to break out of. I'm used to shutting down.

[devoutish]

That scares me, more than anything. It reminds me of the MN poisoning.

[bywolves]

It scares me, too. It feels like second nature, sometimes. [ He lets out a long sigh. ] I never did wish the nanomachines out of me.

[devoutish]

No, neither did I. But I don't feel them in me any longer.

[bywolves]

I don't either. I think they're just dormant.

[devoutish]

They might've been flushed out, as well. Do you know if there's a chance of that, with nanomachines?

[bywolves]

I don't know. We could ask John when he's done being an idiot.

[devoutish]

[Alfie snorts.]

You can ask John, if you like.

[bywolves]

Are you not speaking to him?

[devoutish]

I'm speaking with him less, yes.

[bywolves]

Is there a reason?

[devoutish]

John Watson doesn't want friends. He wants projects.

[bywolves]

[ Royce carefully wraps his arms around Alfie again, hugging him. ]

I don't think you're wrong. Is he trying to treat you like one?

[devoutish]

Sure, yeah, all the time.

[Alfie says matter-of-factly.]

This time, though, it was the other way round - he wasn't much interested in treating me like a friend.

[bywolves]

What he always does: made it very clear that he has no interest in having a conversation with any depth or importance to it.
